Why NRIs choose an online dermatologist from India

  • Experience with Indian and South Asian skin. Dermatologists in India treat pigmentation, melasma, post-acne dark marks and keloids in brown skin every day. Treatments that suit fair skin are not always right for darker skin, and the wrong peel or laser can leave new dark patches.
  • No long waits. In many countries a dermatology appointment can take weeks or months, especially through a family doctor referral. An online consultation lets you get expert advice sooner and decide whether you need to be seen in person.
  • Your own language. Describing an itch, a rash or years of hair fall is easier in Telugu, Hindi, Urdu or Marathi, and so is understanding the treatment plan.
  • A clear plan before your next trip home. If you are planning a procedure such as a chemical peel, PRP for hair loss, acne scar treatment or mole removal during a visit to India, a video consultation first lets you plan it properly.
  • Help for parents in India. You can book a skin consultation for your parents in India from abroad and join the call from your own time zone.

Skin, hair and nail problems a dermatologist can treat online

Most common skin conditions can be assessed well on video, especially with clear photos. These are the problems people most often consult a dermatologist online for:

ConcernHow an online dermatologist can help
Acne and acne scarsIdentify the type of acne, build a routine that suits your skin, prescribe treatment and plan scar treatment for when the acne is controlled
Pigmentation, melasma and dark spotsTell melasma from post-inflammatory pigmentation and tanning, set up sun protection and a safe treatment plan for brown skin
Hair fall and thinning hairFind the likely cause (stress-related shedding, pattern hair loss, thyroid or iron problems, dandruff), suggest tests and start treatment
Eczema and very dry skinCalm flares, adjust moisturisers and washing habits for a cold climate, and plan long-term control
PsoriasisReview the extent, adjust creams and treatment, and plan follow-up
Fungal infections (ringworm, tinea)Confirm the diagnosis and treat the whole family where needed, because these infections spread easily
Rashes, hives and skin allergiesLook for triggers such as new products, detergents or foods, and plan treatment
Nail problemsAssess nail fungus, brittle nails and colour changes
Skincare and anti-ageing (cosmetology)A routine and products that suit your skin, and honest advice on which cosmetic procedures are worth considering

Common skin changes after moving abroad

A new climate, new water and a new routine often show up on the skin within the first year. Common patterns include:

  • Cold winters and indoor heating in the UK, Canada, Europe and the northern USA dry the skin and can trigger eczema, cracked heels and itchy legs.
  • Heat, humidity and strong sun in the Gulf, Singapore and parts of Australia make fungal infections, sweat rashes, tanning and melasma more likely.
  • Hair shedding two to three months after a big change, such as a move, illness, childbirth, crash dieting or stress, is common. This is called telogen effluvium and usually settles, but a dermatologist should check for other causes such as low iron or thyroid problems.
  • New products bought abroad, or creams carried from home, can irritate the skin. Avoid using steroid-containing creams, including some "fairness" creams, without a doctor's advice: long-term use can thin the skin and worsen acne and pigmentation.

Dermatology for brown skin: why experience matters

Darker skin types are more likely to develop dark marks after acne or injury (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), melasma and raised scars (keloids). Some peels, lasers and bleaching creams that are routine for fair skin can make pigmentation worse in brown skin. A dermatologist who treats Indian skin every day will choose gentler options, stress daily sunscreen, and set realistic timelines, because pigmentation usually improves over months rather than weeks.

What an online dermatologist can and cannot do

On a video consultation, a dermatologist can: look at your skin, hair or nails on camera and in the photos you share, take a detailed history, explain the likely diagnosis in plain language, recommend tests, give a treatment plan and skincare routine, issue a digital prescription where appropriate, and review your progress at follow-up.

A video consultation cannot: replace a biopsy, a close dermoscopy examination of a suspicious mole, a full-body skin check, or procedures such as peels, lasers, PRP, wart removal or mole removal. If you need any of these, the dermatologist will tell you so you can arrange them locally or on your next visit to India.

Moles need extra care. See a doctor in person promptly if a mole shows any of the ABCDE warning signs: Asymmetry, irregular Border, uneven Colour, Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, or Evolving (changing in size, shape or colour), or if it bleeds or itches. The American Academy of Dermatology explains these signs in detail.

How to take good photos for an online skin consultation

  1. Use daylight. Stand near a window. Avoid flash, filters and beauty modes.
  2. Take one close-up and one wider photo so the doctor can see both the detail and where it is on your body.
  3. Remove makeup from the area and take photos before applying creams.
  4. For hair fall, photograph your parting, crown and hairline, and a handful of shed hairs.
  5. Note the history: when it started, what makes it better or worse, and the products and medicines you use. Keep your creams, face wash and shampoo nearby during the call.

Meet our dermatologists

Prescriptions and medicines when you live outside India

Where it is medically appropriate, the dermatologist issues a digital prescription in your account. Pharmacies outside India usually do not accept a prescription from a doctor registered in India, so treat it as expert medical advice. Many skincare products and some treatments are available without a prescription; for prescription-only medicines, your local doctor can review the plan and prescribe. The dermatologist can suggest options that are easy to find where you live.

When not to wait for an online consultation

An online consultation is not for emergencies. Go to the nearest hospital or emergency department if you have:

  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing
  • A rash with fever, blisters, peeling skin or sores in the mouth or eyes
  • A painful, red, hot, spreading area of skin with fever
  • A severe reaction after starting a new medicine

Frequently asked questions

Can I consult an Indian dermatologist online from the USA, UK or UAE?

Yes. VRA Health connects patients in any country with dermatologists in India by private video call. Slots are shown in your local time and the full fee is shown in your currency before you book.

Is an online dermatologist consultation as good as visiting a clinic?

For most common problems such as acne, pigmentation, hair fall, eczema and fungal infections, a video consultation with good photos lets a dermatologist make a diagnosis and plan treatment. Suspicious moles, biopsies and procedures still need an in-person visit, and the dermatologist will tell you if you need one.

Can an Indian dermatologist's prescription be used abroad?

Usually not at a pharmacy outside India, because it is issued by a doctor registered in India. Use it as expert advice; your local doctor can prescribe any prescription-only medicine, and the dermatologist can suggest products available where you live.

How much does an online dermatologist consultation cost?

Each doctor sets their own fee. Patients outside India see the full amount in their own currency before booking, including the VRA Health international service fee, and pay only after the doctor accepts.

Which languages can I consult in?

Our dermatologists consult in English, Hindi, Telugu, Urdu and Marathi.

Can I book a dermatologist for my parents in India?

Yes. You can book from abroad and join the same video call, so you hear the advice first-hand.

What photos should I share for an online skin consultation?

Clear daylight photos without filters or makeup: one close-up and one wider shot of each area. For hair fall, photograph the parting, crown and hairline.

Can a dermatologist check a mole online?

A dermatologist can look at a mole on video and in photos and tell you how urgently it needs an in-person check. A mole that is changing, bleeding or irregular in shape or colour should be examined in person.
